Steps to plan a visit

  1. Get the visitor questionnaire

The incarcerated person must mail you a CDCR Visitor Questionnaire. See CDCR's instructions

  2. Mail your application

Fill it out and mail it to the Visiting Sergeant or Lieutenant at the prison you'll visit. Prison mailing addresses

  3. Wait for approval

CDCR runs a background check and reviews your application. They'll let the incarcerated person know if and when you're approved.

  4. Schedule your visit

Once you're approved, schedule a visit online or by email. How to schedule. Check our Visitor Center hours for the prison.

  5. Read the visiting rules

Read the CDCR Visiting Guidelines carefully, including the dress code. Not following them can cause prison staff to cancel your visit.

  6. Stop at the Visitor Center

On visiting day, come to the Friends Outside Visitor Center first. We can lend clothing, explain the rules and arrange a ride from a nearby motel or bus station. Find your Visitor Center
